After receiving federal documents confirming that five baby rhesus monkeys died or were euthanized due to the negligence of staff at the New Iberia Research Center at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, PETA asked the district attorney to investigate their deaths and apparent violations of Louisiana’s animal cruelty law.
According to an inspection report issued by the USDA, UL-Lafayette did not notice a malfunction of the water dispenser in the animal cages. As a result, the baby monkeys likely endured a long painful death, leaving five mothers mourning.
Investigators documented that on July 19, a baby monkey that was unresponsive and showed signs of dehydration was euthanized. The staff apparently did not take care of the problem, as two more monkey cubs died the next day and two more were euthanized. These deaths happened two days.
In a letter to District Attorney Lafayette, PETA claimed the university had violated state animal cruelty law.
History of UL-Lafayette Animal Welfare Violations
The death of these baby monkeys is not an anomaly – the university has an infamous history of violating animal welfare laws. In 2017, after several breaches of animal welfare, including when a monkey was injured and died of a cerebral hemorrhage, and when laboratory staff broke the arm of a mother monkey who was trying to protect her infant, the university paid a $ 100,000 fine.
In 2013, the school was fined after the institution failed to provide the primates with adequate veterinary care and safe keeping, resulting in the death of three rhesus monkeys and injuries to chimpanzees. In 2007, he was fined after 55 rhesus monkeys fled the institution.

Monkeys are highly social, intelligent, and emotionally complex creatures, not test tubes. Macaque mothers gaze fondly into the eyes of their babies, forming a strong, loving bond. Female rhesus monkeys use soft, melodic sounds or “baby talk” to calm babies.
UL-Lafayette needs to stop using our fellow primates – and all other animals – in useless experimentation and instead engage in ethical research pertaining to humans.
