Part of the reason puppies are so cute is that they are cute lack of life experience.
They haven’t earned all that “on the job” knowledge that your average adult canine companion has, and so older dogs can get a little cranky in the presence of an over-excited and playful pup.
Grumpy aside, you can’t help but laugh when a puppy just doesn’t get it. Here are a few things puppies don’t understand with hilarious results.
1. Mirrors

As far as a puppy knows, they are looking at a completely different puppy on their property when they see themselves in a mirror. No self-respecting puppy will put up with some furry freeloader trying to steal their treats.
A puppy’s reflection becomes their greatest nemesis, somehow copying their every move, as if they were ahead of the game. “How did that man know exactly what I was going to do?” a puppy may wonder.
I’m not sure puppies will ever understand mirrors when they grow into adult dogs. Maybe they’re just getting used to having identical twins in the closet.
2. Glass doors
You can’t blame puppies for running headlong into closed glass doors. YouTube is full of people who do it regularly. But after hitting that glass a few times, they usually get a little more careful going through door frames.
Many adult dogs will even wait outside, even with the glass in the door open, to avoid banging their heads. Puppy crashes taught them well.
3. Limes & Citrus
If everything you’ve ever eaten is dog food, something sour or spicy might blow your mind. Imagine a flavor you’ve never had before, a flavor that hits a whole new set of taste buds you’ve never used.
You might start to think that this brand new food is confusing you, just waiting to attack your mouth the moment you’re on your toes. You better keep a close eye on this little green guy.
4. Ice cream
Puppies don’t understand what this clear, cold, wet stuff is. All they know is that it’s lovely on a hot day.
They know they have water in their bowl, and they can occasionally see snow. But the fact that these two things can come together in one small cube is beyond them.
It can cause quite a bit of confusion.
5. Television
Puppies don’t know why things move in the magic window you have in your living room, and often they aren’t happy about it. They jump, bark and even run behind the TV to see if anything is escaping into the back of the real world.
The worst culprit is the doorbell sound effect in so many pizza delivery advertisements. Your dog can’t tell the difference between a sound effect and a real doorbell because frankly, a doorbell is a sound effect to start with.
6. Doorstops
Those weird, bouncy, metal bits keep bouncing back for more and making the most satisfying sound. No matter how much a puppy attacks, the doorstop will bounce back and defy all rational puppy logic.
Puppies may not understand what’s going on with these things, but they make ideal playmates with just as much energy to carry on as any other puppy.
7. Your Shenanigans
So you’re the type of person who ties carrots to a ceiling fan for fun? Puppies don’t get your humor, but they do play along.
Humans are weird, but somehow puppies still find it in their hearts to deal with our silly ways and give us lots of love no matter what. Especially if it contains a delicious carrot for them.
