On International Women’s Day (March 8), PETA celebrates three Latin Americans who stood up for Lolita, the long-suffering killer whale that has been in the world’s smallest killer whale aquarium for over 50 years. The tank is only four times the length of her body at its widest point, which creates an unbearable sensation for a person who usually swims up to 140 miles a day in open waters. Killer whales in the ocean dive thousands of feet, far from Lolita’s prison, only 20 feet deep at its deepest – too shallow to escape the scorching Florida sun.
In nature, killer whales live in large social herds and often spend their entire lives with their families. But Lolita was taken from her mother when she was just 4 years old and hasn’t seen any other killer whales since 1980, when her tank mate Hugo died after bumping her head into the side of a tank again and again.
On International Women’s Day, PETA Latino celebrates these three stars for helping us demand Lolita’s release.
Cate del castillo
Internationally renowned actor and passionate animal rights activist Keith del Castillo joins PETA Latino to advocate for animals used for entertainment. The activism is not new to Kate, who starred in a 2017 video in which she urged the Miami Marine Aquarium to release Lolita to the seaside sanctuary. According to her, “Lolita lives without a killer whale company in this hellish tourist trap and has to spend her life performing ridiculous stunts in exchange for dead fish. But it doesn’t have to be that way. “
Alicia Machado
Alicia Machado is a former Miss Universe known for denouncing bullying and body shame. Originally from Venezuela, she spoke out against fur, starring in a positive campaign called “Proud to Be Me and Fur-Free,” and she encouraged her fans to neuter or neuter their companion animals. She attended PETA’s 50th birthday protest.th the anniversary of the captivity and calls her release “a duty that we as humans bear to our brothers and sisters, animals.”
Natasha Araos
Natasha Araos is from Venezuela, vegan fitness model, influencer and mother. She often contacts her 1.6 million Instagram followers to object to Lolita’s imprisonment. She said, “[L]deliberate [Lolita] so she can … swim, dive and [have] a more natural life that it deserves. “
Natasha also attended PETA’s 50th birthday protest.th anniversary of the captivity and together with PETA Latino demands that Lolita be sent to rest in a marine sanctuary in her native waters of Puget Sound, where killer whales in her flock – perhaps even her mother – swim freely to this day. In the seaside reserve, she will be able to feel the waves again and finally find some semblance of natural life – perhaps even communicate with her long-lost family.
