Surrey, British Columbia – PETA sent a letter this morning to Connor Ewen, CEO of Pontus Protein, urging him to cancel the company’s plans to set up an intensive fish farm at a facility that will grow duckweed (“water lentils”) to sell protein powder. vegans.

“Vegans are just as likely to buy lentils from an unhealthy, inhuman and environmentally harmful fish farm as they are slaughterhouse corn,” says PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “Fish farms are brutal and unstable, so we urge Pontus to rethink this disastrous plan.”

PETA notes that setting up a fish factory is a particularly bad move for a company that bills itself as “environmentally friendly.” Trout, the species that Pontus plans to breed, is carnivorous and will likely feed on other fish that are believed to be caught in the wild, so Pontus will continue to support industrial fishing, which is responsible for the deaths of billions of animals (including “ Non-target ”species such as dolphins), pollution of waterways and destruction of ocean ecosystems. Like other animals raised in the industrial food system, farmed fish often suffer from deformities, injury and disease and are subjected to brutal methods of slaughter, such as suffocation, freezing or cutting of their gills.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to eat or otherwise abuse” – opposes specisism, which is a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…

This is followed by a letter from PETA to Ewen.

    March 8, 2021

    Connor Yuen, CEO

    Pontus Protein Ltd.

    Dear Mr. Yuen:

I am writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our over 6.5 million members and supporters around the world, including nearly 450,000 in Canada, to urge Pontus Protein to scrap plans to establish an intensive fish farm at the facility. … where you will grow water lentils. Building a plant-based protein powder production at the time of fish slaughter will alienate the ethical consumer market you hope to tap into. Harming animals will not make Pontus a market destroyer – your company will simply contribute to a violent and volatile future.

Fish suffers immeasurably when they are locked up in huge quantities in cramped tanks and slaughtered for consumption. Neuroscientists confirm that fish have a nervous system and pain receptors. Hundreds of scientific papers on fish intelligence show that these wonderful animals have impressive long-term memories, use tools, and groom potential mates. Even under ideal conditions, trauma, infection and disease in industrial fish are rampant. And aquafarms are not sustainable at all, especially when they involve raising carnivorous species such as trout. Nearly a fifth of wild-caught fish is fed to farmed fish, exacerbating ocean depletion. The alternative – feeding the fish with soy instead of eating the plants themselves – leads to deforestation, agricultural runoff and ocean dead zones.

Those “who value what they feed their bodies and what we feed the land” will condemn your support for industrially farmed fish, which are almost as vegan as growing corn in a slaughterhouse. Unfortunately, if Pontus Protein moves forward with its plan to set up a factory farm, we will have to categorize water lentil supplements as non-vegan and inform our supporters that their purchase supports the abuse of sensitive fish. Please think again. Looking forward to your reply.

    Sincerely,

    Tracy Reiman

    Executive Vice President
