Tears are shed all over the world over the loss of animal rights activist Montserrat Sakatelko, including PETA and PETA Latino. Her recent murder in Puebla, Mexico shocked people to the core.

Everyone who has had the honor to know Montserrat describes her as a fearless champion of a better world for animals.

If you, too, are shocked by this tragedy – if your heart is heavy – know that you can take action right now to honor Montserrat and all that she stood for. We must not allow her to die in vain.

“In Memory of Montserrat Sacatelko, Friend of Animals” is the message that will adorn the Tree of Life memorial at the Sam Simon Center – PETA’s headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia – to honor Montserrat, an animal rights activist whose killing in Puebla stunned people from everywhere and sparked widespread talk about animal liberation.

Friends and family members commended her hard work in rescuing and finding dog homes, as well as her dedication to encouraging the authorities to protect animals. In her memory, we must follow our sorrow more more than just tears: we must take more action, exert more effort, and demand more change for animals. In honor of Montserrat, whose work has included efforts to end bullfighting, PETA Latino is calling on Puebla Governor Miguel Barbosa Huerta to ban bullfighting in the state. We hope that Governor of Barbosa will join us in paying tribute in working to end the torture and killing of vulnerable bulls.

In a typical bullfight, even before the “fight” begins, the bull’s eyesight often deteriorates and is weakened by beatings. In the arena, men drive with spears and dive banderillas (wooden sticks with sharp knife-like ends) into the back of the bull before the matador tries to kill him by cutting his aorta or spinal cord with a sword. The bull may be paralyzed, but is still conscious when his body is pulled out of the arena.

In Mexico, bullfighting is prohibited in Coahuila, Guerrero, Quintana Roo, and Sonora. The Governor of Barbosa has the opportunity to make his mark, as Montserrat did. Her tragic and untimely death could have been …must be a catalyst for change in industries that abuse animals, including bullfighting.

You Can Respect Montserrat Too: Respect The Animals She Loved

Here are four things you can do right now to pay tribute to Montserrat and the exploited animals:

    1. Help put an end to the bloody torture of the bulls –call for a ban on bullfighting…
    2. Become a vegan and save almost 200 animals a year.
    3. Montserrat Canal Activity: Join the PETA Action Team…
    4. Encourage your friends and family to be louder about animals too: share this blog post at Facebook and Twitter…
