Austin, Minnesota. – Armed with USDA reports suggesting that turkeys sustained broken wings and legs and other serious injuries as a result of mistreatment by workers at two slaughterhouses run by Jennie-O Turkey, a subsidiary of Hormel Foods Corp. located in Austin. – PETA sent a letter to Acting Minnesota District Attorney W. Anders Folk asking them to review the matter and, if necessary, file a federal criminal case against the company and employees. PETA recently received federal records through a public records request.
Reports indicate that about 50 turkeys on a conveyor belt at a slaughterhouse in Faribo were pulled out so hard that their legs were broken, their muscles and skin were torn, and the belt was covered in blood. At the Willmar slaughterhouse, 65 birds suffered broken wings and / or sharp bruises on their legs when a worker unloaded live turkeys from a truck with such force that the animals’ feet hit the bar and the birds hit the wall.
“These reports show that the birds were so abused that they were left broken and bloody,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nachminovic. “PETA encourages everyone who still eats turkeys to remember the pain and suffering of these vulnerable animals – and opt for vegan food instead.”

Dear Mr. Falk:
I am requesting your office to investigate and bring appropriate criminal charges against Jennie-O Turkey Store, LLC and the employees responsible for violations of the Poultry Inspection Act at her slaughterhouses located in Willmar and Faribo. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has documented the incidents in the attached reports, which PETA has just received upon request from open sources.
According to one report, on January 29, 2020, FSIS officials found that 65 turkeys suffered broken wings and / or sharp bruises – up to 11 inches long – on their feet at a slaughterhouse located at 2505 Willmar Ave. SW, Willmar. During the investigation, a federal agent saw a worker unload live turkeys from a truck with such force that the animals’ feet hit the crossbar and the birds were sent to the conveyor with such force that they crashed into a wall. The FSIS inspector instructed Jennie-O to take corrective action, but returned to the area to find that nothing had been done and that the turkeys continued to be injured.
On February 26, 2020, an FSIS agent saw several Jennie-O workers “pulling … aggressively” about 50 turkeys that had gathered on a conveyor belt at a slaughterhouse located at 1116 Fourth Avenue, Northwest, Faribo. A federal inspector saw that the animals had broken legs, that their muscles and skin were torn and maimed, and that the conveyor belt was covered in blood.
21 United States Code § 461 (a) penalizes imprisonment for up to one year and / or a fine of up to $ 1,000 for such behavior. It is in the interests of the animals and society killed there to be prosecuted for such flagrant cruelty to live turkeys.
