Salem, Oregon. – After hundreds of Oregon-based PETA supporters called on Gov. Keith Brown to end fur production across the state, PETA posted a billboard outside its office that points to the risk of a pandemic associated with dirty fur farms and urges it to ban them. Captive minks at fur farms in the state have already tested positive for COVID-19, including one found on the street after escaping captivity.

“Fur farms are filled with stressed animals that can spread mutating viruses, which could render vaccines ineffective,” said PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “Governor. Brown needs to address a potential public health emergency by closing these petri dishes in the event of a pandemic. “

COVID-19 has spread like wildfire across mink farms around the world. At least six countries (Denmark, the Netherlands, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland and the United States) and the Faroe Islands have reported mink-associated SARS-CoV-2 mutant strains in humans. Due to the risk of a pandemic, mink farming is phasing out in France and the Netherlands, and Poland has voted to ban fur farms.

PETA also notes that fur farms are breeding grounds for suffering, with minks spinning desperately in small wire cages, and many of them suffer from broken or deformed legs, as well as other injuries and illnesses. Some animals self-harm as a result of intense confinement by gnawing on their own legs or tails. At the end of their miserable life, they are gassed, electrocuted, or their necks broken.

The ad is located at 2605 Hawthorne Ave. NE.

PETA – whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
