Louisville, Kentucky. – PETA wants everyone who wants to save horses’ lives to practice moral stay away from Churchill Downs. This message will be delivered via a mobile billboard installed around the racetrack on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The racing industry’s own statistics show that fewer bone fractures and deaths occur on synthetic surfaces than on dirt or grass, so PETA, which owns stock in Churchill Downs, Inc., asked the company to advise on the possibility of switching to a dirt track. to a modern synthetic surface. The company refuses to do so for now.

“While horses are dying in Churchill Downs, no one should visit or place bets on the Kentucky Derby,” says PETA Senior Vice President Katy Guillermo. PETA encourages moral distance myself from Churchill Downs in protest against 25 horses – every thinking, feeling person – who died there last year. “

More than 6,500 horses died in the country between 2009 and 2019, according to the Jockey Club’s Horse Injury Database. The highest incidence of catastrophic injuries occurred on unpaved roads: 1.19 fatal injuries per 1000 starts on synthetic routes versus 1.94 such injuries on unpaved surfaces and 1.48 on turf. More than 100 horses’ lives would be saved a year if the races were conducted on synthetic rather than dirt tracks. These statistics don’t even include all deaths during training on dirt roads.

The billboard will move along Central Avenue outside Churchill Downs tomorrow from 11:00 to 19:00, Friday from 10:00 to 16:00 and from 18:00 to 20:00 and Saturday from 9:30 to 17:00 :thirty.

PETA – whose motto, among other things, is that “animals do not belong to us to be used for entertainment or abuse in other ways” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
