Norfolk, Virginia. – PETA just received USDA reports for the period Jan 1 to May 18, 2020, which indicate that inspectors cited 61 massacres in 143 cases for cruel treatment of chickens, turkeys and ducks in violation of the Poultry Inspection Act.
The workers beat, kicked, threw, ran over, scalded and tore at the birds; left thousands to die in trucks in the cold, without food or water; and more. The reports include violations at 22 businesses run by the four largest chicken slaughters in the country and slaughterhouses in 23 states – and since some of these incidents also appear to violate state animal cruelty laws, PETA is asking local authorities to conduct investigation and sue. relevant accusations against slaughterhouses and responsible workers.
“Turkeys, ducks and chickens are thirsty, hungry, fearful and in pain just like us,” says Daphne Nachminovich, PETA’s senior vice president of cruelty investigations. “This type of suffering is common in the meat industry, and PETA encourages everyone who still eats animals to consider the painful, horrific death of these birds and go vegan.”
At Tyson’s slaughterhouse, 17 chickens drowned when slaughter operations were suspended for an unknown reason, and the heads of the animals were trapped in a tank of electrified water; in Pride of the Pilgrim, a worker threw a chicken into an obstacle, killing the bird; at the Sanderson farm, a worker kicked a chicken onto a conveyor belt; and on Purdue farms, the birds were scalded to death in seven days. At Hormel Jennie-O Turkey, the second largest turkey slaughter company in the country, workers treated the turkeys so violently that their wings and legs were broken and their muscles crippled.
