Cleveland – PETA just received incriminating federal filings showing that while the Cleveland Clinic publicly denied employee negligence and animal suffering documented in PETA’s six-month covert investigation, it privately reported multiple other violations of federal animal welfare guidelines to the National Institutes of Health. Health (NIH).

This is among the incidents documented between 2018 and 2021: workers placed mice in “overcrowded” cages, which can cause fatal contractions among stressed animals, and experimenters have repeatedly deviated from approved protocols, including by infecting and injecting mice with bacteria tumor cells. by applying depilatories to the skin, causing lesions, and cutting off the ends of their tails without adequate pain relief.

In a letter sent this morning, PETA is urging NIH Director of Laboratory Animal Welfare Patricia Brown to withdraw the Public Health Animal Welfare Guarantee given to the Cleveland Clinic, without which it cannot receive NIH funding. According to a 2018 Pew Research Center poll, most Americans oppose any kind of animal experimentation. Research shows that a staggering 90% of basic research, most of it involving animals and the types of work done at the Cleveland Clinic, does not lead to treatment for humans.
