A new PETA Asia Video Revealed leading Japanese pork producer Nippon Ham reports that piglets and their mothers are being brutally abused. While the company claims to care about human happiness and “the pleasure of food,” it clearly doesn’t care about animal welfare. Pigs that are raised and killed for food do not experience joy or anything else to make their life worth living.
Their lives are full of pain and suffering. Nippon Ham workers grab the piglets by their sensitive ears and toss them like inanimate objects. Those who are not considered “profitable” because they are too small or sick are thrown away like trash. Workers usually kill unwanted piglets by tossing them in the air and banging their heads on a concrete floor, or injecting disinfectant into their hearts. One piglet writhed in agony for five minutes after a worker had poisoned him in this way. Another languished for an hour and eventually died after a worker hit his head on a concrete floor.
Piglets at Nippon Ham are taken from their mothers when they are only 22 days old, as is the case on most pig farms. Workers castrate them and cut their tails off without painkillers. The camera filmed a worker who cut the scrotum of a young pig and pulled out his testicles with his fingers.
Suffering and nowhere to turn to Nippon Ham
Mother of pigs, or sowsare forced to spend most of their miserable lives in metal boxes that are so small they can’t even turn around. Their muscles atrophy, they are constantly stiff and sore. They have no choice but to urinate, defecate, eat and sleep in the same cramped cage. It was noticed that the workers even beat them with a heavy piece of metal frame.
The injured sows had to endure the suffering of their own piglets right before our eyes. Their cubs squealed and thrashed violently as workers crudely castrated them or cut off their tails, and the mother pigs could do nothing.
Animals born of abuse at Nippon Ham
Thousands of sows are detained and repeatedly raped by artificial insemination. They deliver litter after litter of piglets, which are always removed from them for rearing for meat or breeding. When who sows not forced to live on dirty factory farms about to give birth, they build a nest in the mud and cover it with soft grass and leaves. But at Nippon Ham, pregnant pigs have to stand on awkward metal bars. After years of around-the-clock confinement, frequent inseminations and pregnancies, they are depleted and sent to the slaughterhouse.
You can help stop pig abuse
All over the world, cruelty is widespread in the meat industry, where animals are treated like a commodity, and not like living, sentient beings. No one needs to eat ham, bacon, sausage or other animal products – today, delicious vegan dishes are available in most restaurants, shops and cafes. Ditching pigs and other animals is easier than ever.
Will you help the pigs by refusing to buy pork and other animal products?
