Calling Vava just another A convenience store is like calling a hamburger “humane” —you just don’t do it because it’s not true.

Wawa stores may only exist in six states on the East Coast, but that didn’t stop the company from winning the title of America’s Favorite Sandwich Store in 2018.

I know what you’re thinking: Wawa, whether it’s a deli, convenience store, or epitome of northeastern culture, doesn’t feel like a vegan haven. What can he offer his vegan patrons? Quite a lot, actually.

In 2020, Wawa created a plant-based section of its menu featuring products including the Beyond Meat breakfast sausage and several vegan drinks.

Vegetable dishes other than meat on the gourmet menu

The Beyond Sausage Sizzli and hoagie sandwich can be made vegetarian by simply tapping on the grocery’s touchscreen.

    • The Beyond Sausage Sizzli (Click No Eggs and then add the filling – fried vegetables, spinach, tomatoes, hot peppers, roasted red peppers and a vegan sauce of your choice – cherry peppers, coarse marinara and barbecue sauce – all vegans.
    • The Beyond Sausage Hoagie (Choose No Eggs and add your choice of toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, spinach, fried vegetables, peppers and gravy.)
    • Banana smoothie graham
    • Strawberry Banana Oat Milk Smoothie
    • Cold beer made from frozen bananas
    • Oat Milk & Cookie Smoothie

Although it would be great if all Wawa were vegan, many of the other foods and drinks on the regular menu are vegan or can be easily prepared with some settings.

    Beverages

Almost all drinks available in the touchscreen menu (with the exception of latte tea, iced cream smoothies, flurricans and hot chocolate) are already vegan or can be prepared at the touch of a button. When you’re presented with a choice of milk, be sure to choose almond, soy, or oat milk to keep your drink animal-friendly. The best part? There is no additional charge for almond and soy milk, either in the self-service coffee shop or when ordering through the touchscreen.

Unfortunately, there is still a 25 cents surcharge for oat milk. While Wawa offers a more affordable premium than Starbucks 80 cents for vegan milk, no one should pay an extra fee for choosing not to use mother cows for their morning cup of coffee. Cows used in the dairy industry are subjected to forced fertilization, separated from their calves after just a few days, and then milked to critical condition. As soon as their bodies can no longer keep pace, they are slaughtered. The natural lifespan of a cow is around 20 years, but most dairy cows die when they are around 5 years old.

    Vegan as is

    • Pre-brewed coffee in a coffee shop
    • Tea in a coffee shop
    • American
    • pasted
    • Cut
    • Troubador
    • Espresso
    • Refreshing drinks (dragon berry fruit, passion fruit berry, mango dragon fruit, and strawberries)
    • Frozen lemonade

Vegan product with added almond, soy, or oat milk

    • Matcha drinks
    • Cappuccino
    • Latte (Caramel and pumpkin sauce uses cow’s milk, so ask if you can substitute salted caramel syrup with any sauce in drinks like pumpkin, maple and caramel lattes).
    • Earl Gray Latte Tea
    • Fruit smoothies including blueberry, pomegranate, mango smoothies, mixed berry smoothies, and many other fruit combinations (avoid those with “freeze” in the name, as the mixture is made from cow’s milk).

    Breakfast

    • Bagels (Order a bagel from the grocery store, then add the peanut butter or almond butter, which are available in single-use packages.)
    • Fruit cups
    • Hash brown (sold at the checkout)
    • Oatmeal with cinnamon and sugar

    Dinner

Wawa is famous for its sausages and the annual Hoagiefest, where each sausage costs just $ 4.99. And if you don’t like sandwiches, there are also pitas, burritos, burrito bowls and salads on the net.

    • Fried veggie hoagi (replace mayonnaise with avocado paste and use regular roll instead of whole grain flour, which contains honey).
    • Burritos and burrito bowls (just skip the cheese and sour cream – the rice and bean filling and the fried vegetables are vegan.)
    • Garden Pita (just replace the ranch balsamic vinaigrette).
    • Spicy vegetable salad with meatballs
    • Garden salad

    Dinner

The dinner menu is a new addition to Wawa, and while the lunch menu is still available all night, Wawa’s dinner options are fantastic if you’re hungry for cheap, hot food.

    • Baked penne with marinara
    • Fried vegetables, broccoli and pasta

    Parties, snacks and takeaway options

    • Dipper with apple peanut butter
    • Beyond the meatballs and marinara
    • Black beans
    • Carrot and Celery with Dipper Peanut Butter
    • Carrot snack
    • Fruit cups
    • Hummus and lavash
    • Rice
    • Soft pretzel (simple and all options)

Sometimes you just need to grab a bite from Wawa, and luckily there are plenty of vegan options to choose from. As consumers, we show companies exactly where we are willing to invest our money, so every time you order a vegan product, you help save animals and make healthier choices for yourself.
