Atlanta – Recent Federal Inspection Report Sun Pet Ltd. – a large local livestock factory – shows obvious suffering and neglect of animals. violation of state law… PETA sent a letter to Fulton County Solicitor General Keith E. Gummage this morning asking him to investigate pet supplier PetSmart and Petco and bring relevant criminal charges against those responsible.
An August 4 report from a facility that contained approximately 13,000 animals at the time of inspection describes how one hamster was eaten alive other severely stressed hamsters and workers did not notice that “pieces of the deceased hamster” were scattered over the animals’ food and bedding. The workers were unable to cure the hamsters and rabbits for puffy and crusted eyes, shortness of breath, hair and weight loss, skin inflammation and other painful conditions; failed to provide the gerbils with sufficient water; and roughly crafted hamster boxes.
“More and more animals are at risk of dying from thirst, injury and other dire reasons until the carelessness and callousness of Sun Pet is contained,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nachminovich. “PETA is asking officials to hold the company responsible for serious animal neglect.”
PETA notes that the federal veterinarians’ findings in Sun Pet appear to violate § 16-12-4 OCGA, which prohibits subjecting an animal to “physical pain, suffering, or death … as a result of any undue … inaction” or “failure.”[ing] give [an] animal adequate … water [or] sanitary conditions “.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not in our hands to be abused in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. The Gammage letter is available here.
