Boston – See the following statement by PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna regarding federal filings disclosing serious breaches of animal welfare at Harvard Medical School:

If workers at Harvard Medical School (HMS) are unable to keep monkeys safe even before they are used in painful and deadly experiments, they should be fired. According to a just released federal inspection report obtained by PETA, two monkeys were seriously injured after staff were unable to verify that the divider was properly secured.

Another federal report, obtained by PETA at the request of the Freedom of Information Act, shows that a young monkey was strangled to death after it stuck its head through a hole in a piece of tissue that served as a surrogate mother. Despite the fact that HMS imprisons monkeys in extreme impoverishment, replacing warm and caring mothers with cloth, the school, which received more than $ 178 million in taxpayer dollars from the National Institutes of Health last year, has the audacity to refer to cloth surrogates as “enrichment.”

Research shows that a staggering 90% of basic research, most of which involves animals and the types of work done at HMS, does not lead to treatment for humans. Our government needs to cut off the hundreds of millions of dollars in grants that go to HMS every year, and instead support human research rather than animal research.
