Ottawa – There will be a mark on October 11 thanksVegan? PETA is betting on it! The group includes Sobeys, Savings on food, Food at low prices, AGE, and other major grocery chains across Canada to showcase their ready-to-roast vegan turkeys and other vegan holiday dishes. In addition, Animal Liberation Kitchen in Toronto and The Very Good Butchers located in Victoria from coast to coast will also distribute #ThanksVegan The word on social media to encourage everyone to enjoy a bird-friendly holiday is clearly already in the minds of many Canadians, as online searches with the word “vegan” in Canada grew 113% from 2016 to 2020.

To bring this message home, PETA painted the cities of Abbotsford, British Columbia (including the airport) and Brandon, Manitoba, with turkeys stating “I am I, not MEAT”; will distribute free vegan stews in Montreal and other major cities; and created the definitive Canadian Vegan Guide for people across the country.

“When people understand that turkeys love their families, feel pain and fear, and value their lives, they are ready to put tofurks on the table,” says PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “PETA offers recipes, shopping tips and more so everyone can enjoy a delicious vegan meal that leaves tender birds alone.”

Turkeys can live up to 10 years, but those raised for food are usually slaughtered in infancy – 12 to 26 weeks old – and millions are killed every Thanksgiving year in Canada alone. The chicks are suspended by their paws on metal shackles and dragged through an electrified bath, and they are often still conscious when their throats are cut and thrown into scalding tanks for skinning.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visitPETA.orgor subscribe to the group onTwitter,Facebook, orInstagram…
