She may be the Lady of Darkness, but when it comes to freeing animals, Cassandra Peterson (also known as “Elvira”) helps others see “relief.” Peterson’s portrayal of the “mistress of horror” is legendary, as is her work for animal rights: she spent decades filming PETA advertising campaigns, protesting, pacing furless catwalks and otherwise screaming for animals. And now with her new book …Yours is Cruel, Elvirawho debuted at number four on New York Times Bestseller List – Peterson talks about how her portrayal of Elvira put her on the PETA card and how her animal activism influenced her later life.
License plate strength
In Chapter 28 (“Lite a Flame”), Peterson recalls changing her station wagon’s license plate to “BAN FUR.” With one simple action, she went home the message that skinning the back of rabbits, foxes or other animals is unacceptable.

‘Fur is fiber’
Drag Queens have been active with PETA long before Drag Racing RuPaul hit the airwaves – and even before the art of resistance escaped from strange spaces and entered the mainstream. In clubs around the world, Elvira and other legends have joined PETA for “Fur Is a Drag” parody shows, in which they wore tattered fur coats covered in blood red paint.
‘I AM Love Elephants!
Peterson recalls that she was offered a seat at Circus of Stars, a television show in which celebrities performed circus acts, sometimes forcing other animals to perform. Although Peterson’s first reaction was, “Wow, fun! I am love elephants! “As soon as she discovered that circus trainers were beating elephants and other animals with hooks and stabbing them with stun guns, she refused. Her refusal to engage in such exploitation has drawn headlines and drew attention to the cruelty animals encounter in circuses – abuses that PETA, Peterson and many others have helped dramatically curb over the years, including by destroying former industrial giant Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
