Monkeys are complex social animals that live in large groups with their families and communicate in their own language, consisting of various calls and gestures. However, as PETA Asia researchers recently found out, monkeys are used for their work and deny everything natural and important to them. PETA Asia researchers visited coconut farms in Thailand and found monkeys with heavy metal collars tied to their necks and forced to climb trees and collect coconuts for hours, including for one of Thailand’s largest coconut milk producers, Chaokoh.

On coconut farms, animals are taught to work in a way that overcomes violence and fear, and are kept chained in dirty trash-strewn areas when not forced to harvest coconuts, even though humane harvesting methods are readily available.

After learning of the ugly origins of Chaokoh’s coconut milk, more than 33,000 stores including Wegmans, Kroger, Target, Albertsons and Safeway took it off their shelves. But Associated Food Stores, which owns Dan’s Fresh Market, Dick’s Fresh Market and Fresh Market, refused.

Please send a polite email to Associated Food Stores informing management that you will not be buying something from the shops until they are no longer involved in forced monkey labor.

Feel free to use the sample letter provided, but remember that your own words may carry more weight.
