Washington – Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Cathy Guillermo regarding news that surgeons have attached a pig kidney to a human:
Pigs are not spare parts and should never be used as such just because people are too selfish to donate their bodies to patients desperate for organ transplants. The headlines do not mention that this “transplant” is not a graft at all. It involved a brain-dead patient on a ventilator, not a person with kidney disease. The pig’s kidney was attached by blood vessels to outsidee of the patient’s body, and he remained there for only 54 hours. Human organs are still the best hope, and prospective consent laws will provide enough funds to help people in need of transplants.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information on collecting news and reporting on PETA investigations, please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
