Crabs look like a sand dollar on their feet! There are over 4,500 species of crabs in a wide variety of sizes. The most common crabs are about the size of your hand, while the largest crab, the giant Japanese spider crab, has a body 15 inches across and a leg span of 9-12 feet from the tip of one claw to the other! The tiniest crab is the pea crab, and as the name suggests, it is about the size of a pea. You are probably familiar with hermit crabs, orange crabs with black beady eyes that live in shells, but they are not really crabs because they have a soft body and cannot grow their own shell like real crabs.

How do crabs hunt?
Some crabs actively hunt smaller crabs, fish and crustaceans (shrimp, krill, shrimp). The Dungeness Crab will scour the ocean floor in search of prey and, for example, use its large claws to grab a passing squid. The king crab has one claw larger than the other, and it is used to crush prey. Edible crabs also hunt their prey, including smaller crabs. What does crab eat?

That’s a lot of crab meat. In the UK, the most common crab is the brown crab or edible crab (I’m not a linguistic genius, but if you’re going to use the word edible in your name, I think your fate is sealed!). These crabs are found on every coast of Great Britain, and there are a lot of them.
In the wild, large crabs such as the king crab in Alaska have few natural predators. But smaller species of crabs can be eaten by fish-eating birds such as the great blue heron, larger fish, and sea turtles.
What does the smallest crab eat?
The smallest crab, the pea crab, looks more like a parasite. It lives inside the shells of other molluscs and mussels. They eat whatever is left of what their master eats. But since pea crabs are so small, you can imagine that they have a very minimal diet.
What does the biggest crab eat?
The largest crab, the giant Japanese spider crab, is a scavenger and feeds on dead animals and dead plants it can find. Others will open up clam shells and eat the meat inside. These giant crabs live at great depths and therefore are not threatened by humans. They can live to be 100 years old!
