Washington – This is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci, who is currently being criticized by the public for his agency funded dog experiments, but rotting at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is deeply ingrained and is on its way to the top. PETA offers a solution, but to make sure President Joe Biden gets the point, PETA is launching full-page ads – today at V Washington Post, tomorrow at Politico And in Hill, and soon in Washington Examiner– a call for him to appoint a visionary leader at the National Institutes of Health who will end the agency’s funding for animal testing and instead invest in modern, animal-free research methods.

Under the leadership of NIH Director Francis Collins, the NIH spent nearly half of its budget on animal experiments – $ 19.5 billion in 2020 – although 95% of new drugs that are tested for safety and efficacy in animals have not passed human clinical trials, and more than 90% of mainstream studies, most of them involving animals, do not lead to treatment in humans. The research modernization deal developed by PETA scientists provides a strategy to phase out such research – and following its review, members of the European Parliament voted last month to develop an action plan to phase out animal experimentation, including a timetable.

“Despite requests from patients, animal experts and forward-thinking scientists, past NIH executives were reluctant to change the agency’s dependence on failed animal models,” says PETA neuroscientist Dr. Emily Trannell. “PETA is calling on President Biden to appoint a new NIH director who is not only forward-thinking, but ready to make the decisions necessary to put the United States back on the forefront of biomedical innovation.”

To carry the message home, PETA supporters in giant inflatable dinosaur costumes followed the president to various events with signs that read “Biden: Don’t Assign Another NIH Dinosaur.”
