Vermilion County, Illinois. “To commemorate dozens of pigs killed when the truck carrying them recently caught fire on I-74 near Oakwood, PETA plans to post a sky-high message near their place of death, which says:“See Human. Become a vegan.“
“The pigs died in horror and agony when fire engulfed this truck and the survivors were loaded onto another trailer and presumably taken to slaughter,” says PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “The PETA Memorial will encourage anyone concerned about animals suffering on the side of the road or under the knife of a slaughterhouse to go vegan.”
In today’s meat industry, workers put mother pigs in narrow metal stalls, a little larger than their bodies, and force them to become pregnant or breastfeed almost constantly; chop off pigs’ tails, cut off their teeth with pliers and castrate males – all without any pain relief; and hang the pigs upside down and bleed out. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year.
PETA notes that there have been more than 60 accidents this year involving trucks transporting animals for food, and that there were more than 70 last year.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information on collecting news and reporting on PETA investigations, please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
