Through revelations such as PETA’s undercover investigation at Sweet Stem Farm, many people now know that “happy” meat is a lie. Another PETA investigation and subsequent landmark lawsuit showed consumers that for chickens whose sensitive beaks are still cut off by a hot blade, and for male chickens that are still chopped alive in a high-speed industrial shredder, buzzwords like “free range” are much less important than you think the egg industry. But what about “humane” milk? To gauge consumer understanding of the dairy industry’s humane washing ploy, we showed shoppers outside of Whole Foods real industry standard videos showing cows stolen from milk on farms that claim higher ethical standards. See for yourself:

As you can see, weaning babies from their mothers can never be a “humane” practice. The assumption that a person can steal milk that these mothers make for their calves is a special concept, that is, ignoring the interests of others in not being exploited, deprived and manipulated simply because they are different from us. … And, as the buyers agree in the video, it was “pretty screwed up” and needs to be stopped.

“She just gave birth!” one passerby exclaimed. “Stop. Let the mothers feed their babies,” another said when asked what she would like to say to “humane” dairy farms.

More than 99% of the animals used for food are raised on industrial farms, many of which may be labeled as “humane,” but still subject animals to horribly harsh industry standards: in vitro fertilization, overcrowding, physical injury without pain relievers , udder infections, etc. other illnesses and injuries, and horrific death. (That’s right – cows used for dairy farming are ultimately killed for meat. If you drink milk and eat cheese, you support the meat industry.) When it comes to dairy products, the only humane option is not to eat them – and the only milk labels you should look for are those that say “vegan” or “vegetable”.
