Five-year-old Sunshine Alpha, from Ishpeming, Michigan, had been saving up her allowance in a piggy bank for something special. Her grandmother, Jackie Alka, assumed Sunshine was saving for a snowmobile, a significant purchase that required a lot of saving. However, one day, Sunshine emptied the piggy bank and began counting the money on the living room floor. To Jackie’s surprise, the amount saved was far too little for a snowmobile.
Curious about why Sunshine had dipped into her savings so soon, Jackie asked her granddaughter what she intended to do with the money. Sunshine replied that she planned to take it to school for milk check-in. When Jackie asked why, Sunshine’s answer brought tears to her eyes.
Sunshine explained that she had already paid for her own milk for the month, but her friend’s mom couldn’t afford to pay for milk. Determined to help her friend, Sunshine decided to use her savings to ensure that her friend could have milk at school.
Jackie was amazed by Sunshine’s kindness and generosity. She decided to accompany her granddaughter to school to explain the purpose of the money. Rita Hauscher, Sunshine’s kindergarten teacher, was deeply moved by the gesture.
Hauscher, like many teachers, often used her own money to provide for her students, including paying for milk for those who couldn’t afford it. Half of the pupils in Sunshine’s class didn’t receive milk due to financial constraints.
Jackie wanted to share her granddaughter’s act of kindness with the world, so she posted a video on Facebook. The video gained attention, and viewers began offering donations to pay for milk for the children. Jackie set up a crowdfunding page with a goal of $700, which would cover the cost of milk for the whole school semester.
However, the response exceeded expectations. Within two weeks, an incredible $6,000 was donated, ensuring that all 20 children in Sunshine’s class could have free milk until the end of the year.
When Sunshine came home from school, she joyfully shared the news with her grandmother. Her friend now had milk, and the rest of the class also had milk, all because of Sunshine’s small act of kindness.
Jackie remarked that Sunshine may not fully understand the impact she has made, but she now knows that she can make a difference. Despite the challenges in Sunshine’s family life, including her mother’s struggles with addiction and imprisonment, her grandmother’s parenting and support have helped her thrive.
