We’ve known for a long time that animal experimenters still live in the dark – after all, they imprison our fellow animals in laboratories and subject them to cruel and useless experiments before killing them. In one egregious example the experimenters used genetically engineered mice as “models” of autistic people.…
In a recent large clinical study, a hormone tested in mice believed to promote social bonding showed: “no significant impactFor autistic children.
The study was dubbed a “major failure,” but it was doomed to fail from the start – children are not mice.
Autism is associated with a wide range of characteristics, including differences in social skills and a tendency toward repetitive behavior. More than a decade of animal experiments have shown that mice cannot replicate the unique aspects of autism in humans, and the scientific community is well aware that using them in experiments will not advance our understanding in this area. It doesn’t take countless failed clinical trials to prove that experiments in mice won’t bring anything of value to autistic people.
Using mice in experiments to “treat” some aspects of autism is a specialty approach and drain
In their failed attempts to reproduce autism in mice, experimenters genetically modify animals, inject them with chemicals, damage their brains, or manipulate bacteria in their stomachs, causing them to communicate less with humans and produce unusual vocalizations.
Although these genetically and experimentally modified mice not autistic and mice are poor models for humans in general, some companies, such as Charles River Laboratories and The Jackson Laboratory, sell these animals to be tortured in mindless experiments often designed to “cure” certain characteristics of autism.

These experiments aren’t just cruel to mice that have important relationships, complex emotions, and self-interests. They also harm neurodivergent people by viewing autism as a problem that needs to be addressed.
Human Relevant Research – Answering the Human Health Question
We cannot experiment with mice and other animals, and there are many modern non-animal research methods that can in fact help autistic people. For example, many human clinical trials have led to advances in early diagnosis, identifying and correcting health differences in autistic patients, and understanding how autism affects adults. PETA has been talking about this from the beginning: it’s time to replace archaic animal experiments with modern research that is relevant to humans.
