Whitehall, Pennsylvania – On a billboard that says “I want you to change,” the chicken looks down at visitors entering or about to enter the local Popeyes restaurant, forcing them to think twice before ordering a fried chicken dinner and encouraging them to choose vegan options instead.

“We don’t know chickens anymore, so it’s time to stop eating them and remember that they love their families, form complex social structures and dream at night like humans do,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “The cartoon character Popeye knew that spinach makes a person stronger, and meat clogs the arteries to the heart, and the heart is what it is.”

As PETA reveals in its video Chicken Backward, tens of thousands of birds killed for their flesh are shoved into dirty barns, and many are scalded to death in emptying tanks. Every person who goes vegan lowers the risk of health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and various types of cancer, and can help prevent future pandemics from meat markets and crowded industrial farms. SARS, swine flu, avian flu, and COVID-19 all arose from keeping and killing animals for food.

PETA notes that other major restaurants and fast food chains including Denny’s, Dunkin ‘, Carl’s Jr. and Del Taco have added vegan meat to their menus, leaving Popeyes in the dust. For tips on how to eat vegan meals at home or out in the restaurant, the group offers a Vegan Starter Kit and a Vegan Mentoring Program.

PETA billboard is located at 1146 MacArthur Rd.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
