International Animal Rescue (IAR) launched a powerful new campaign against poachers in Armenia who kill female brown bears in order to steal their cubs and sell them for captivity as tourist attractions.
The history of bears in Armenia is vividly and poignantly told in an animated film created Northforge By the actor and animal advocate Peter Egan.
The cartoon shows a teddy bear in the wild with its mother, mastering the skills that he will need one day to survive on his own. But the carefree mood is disturbed by the looming silhouette of a man with a gun. The mother is killed, and the little cub is captured and sentenced to life imprisonment. The film combines animation with real-life footage, a combination that effectively conveys the heartless cruelty and suffering that people suffer.
At the end of the animation, viewers are encouraged to sign a petition calling for harsher penalties for bear poachers in Armenia and circulate the petition through their social media.
Alan Knight OBE, Executive Director of International Animal Rescue, said: “The pursuit of brown bears in Armenia has been going on for quite a long time. In 2017 with our Armenian partners FPWC (Wildlife Conservation Fund as well as Cultural values), we launched Big Dipper rescue whose goal is to free all the caged bears in Armenia and give them the life they deserve. Until we saved 30 bears but there may be up to fifty more waiting to be released. We strive to release as many rescued bears into the wild as possible.
“By focusing on the role of poachers in trapping these bears, we are addressing an aspect of the problem that costs the lives of adult female bears and deprives their cubs of freedom. Many of the bears we rescue have spent years in squalid little cages, bored, frustrated, and unable to exhibit any of the natural bear behavior.
“The fine in Armenia for poaching bears is ridiculous. It’s time to make poachers pay for their crimes. We hope that a significant increase in the fine will scare off poachers and save the bears from being killed, not caught and left to languish in captivity for many years. “
International Animal Rescue, along with its Armenian partners, is pushing for a sharp increase in fines for poaching wild bears. Despite being red-listed, the penalties are currently negligible. 2500 dollars.
