UMass is imprisoning dozens of tiny monkeys that are susceptible to disease in laboratories to study menopause – a condition these primates don’t even experience naturally. The experimenters tie frightened monkeys to restraints, drill through their skulls and implant electrodes, slit their necks to expose muscles, and thread electrode wires from the scalp and neck to the abdomen. To mimic their “hot flashes”, the experimenters cut out their ovaries and warmed the animals with hand warmers, such as those placed in mittens in winter. In another experiment, castrated male monkeys were injected with testosterone and then tested for their cognitive function. Then the animals are killed.
The university, which receives nearly $ 4 million annually from taxpayers for such experiments, was cited by the USDA for severely burning a monkey on a heating pad while recovering from surgery and for failing to alert the treating veterinarian about sick animals. , and allowing the monkey to escape and injure the animal’s tail during recapture.
