Tampa – Wide Tampa Bay Receiver Chris Godwin just put on a play to help the dogs in the backyard: This morning, the Super Bowl champion sent a letter on behalf of PETA to declare Rep. Wyman Duggan’s support for Bill 177, which prohibits dogs from being tethered on the street alone, including number during severe weather such as hurricanes.

“This vital piece of legislation will save the lives of countless vulnerable animals and reduce the need for kind, caring people who risk their own lives to save animals in hazardous weather conditions,” writes Godwin, a proud guardian of two dogs and who founded the company with his fiancée to help dogs at risk.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…

This is followed by a letter from Godwin to Duggan.

    The Honorable Wyman Duggan

    Florida House of Representatives

    Dear Representative Duggan:

As a Florida resident, wide receiver of the Tampa Bay Pirates, Super Bowl champion, and proud guardian of two dogs who live happily at home with my family, I am writing to ask you to place Household Law 177 (Pet Tying) Dogs and Cats) on the agenda days of the Subcommittee on Civil Justice and Property Rights.

Animals kept in chains outside always run the risk of being entangled, hanged or attacked by other animals, including violent humans. They also depend on the weather. Just a few years ago, more than 50 animals were left chained outside Palm Beach County when their owners were evacuated by Hurricane Irma. This number only applies to animals that could be rescued by local authorities – it is not known how many remained unnoticed or who could not be helped after rescuers had to stop their efforts because the weather became too dangerous for their work. My fiancee and I started the Team Godwin Foundation to support at-risk dogs through advocacy and financial support. We have first-hand experience with animals that needed to be rescued after being trapped in dangerous outdoor conditions. HB 177 did not allow animals to be tethered while outdoors, including in severe weather conditions such as thunderstorms, tropical storms and hurricanes. This vital piece of legislation will save the lives of countless vulnerable animals and reduce the need for kind, caring people who risk their own lives to save animals in hazardous weather conditions.

Please add HB 177 to the agenda of the Subcommittee on Civil Justice and Property Rights. Thanks for your time and attention. I hope that you will give a chance to hear this saving law.

    Sincerely,

    Chris Godwin
