Lafayette, Louisiana. – Following the discovery of a USDA report stating that five baby monkeys died of dehydration at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, PETA is calling on District Attorney Donald D. Landry to investigate and prosecute animal cruelty.

UL-Lafayette violated federal animal welfare laws by denying water to monkeys. The staff were unable to test the drinking device, which was broken, causing the animals to become dehydrated. After the first monkey died and then four more monkeys died or had to be euthanized, according to federal reports, employees did not take proper care of the problem after the first monkey died. These deaths took place in just two days.

“These baby monkeys couldn’t even rely on staff for basic needs such as water“Says PETA Senior Vice President Katy Guillermo. PETA urges the district attorney to investigate UL-Lafayette and bring charges against those responsible for their suffering.

This isn’t the first time UL-Lafayette has violated federal animal welfare laws. In 2017, he paid a $ 100,000 fine for several violations, including one in which a monkey was injured and died of a cerebral hemorrhage, and another when laboratory staff broke the arm of the mother of a monkey who was trying to protect her infant, and then failed. provide veterinary care for the injured animal within five days.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence.
