San Francisco – Pants on Fire awards are donated from PETA to 10 companies guilty of humane wash– that is, attempts to defraud consumers about their use and abuse of animals – and local fashion brands Everlane and the Allbirds among them, claiming that they care about animal welfare and the environment, although Everlane sells alpaca wool and Allbirds sells wool stolen from sheep.
Everlane claims to be “ethical” and “green,” but the Higga Sustainability Index has put alpaca wool, which caused workers to be caught tying crying alpacas to a hanger and leaving them with bloody wounds from rough haircuts, the second most sustainable material, noting that it is six times more dangerous than polyester and more than four times more dangerous than modal, rayon, rayon, lyocell, acrylic and other vegan materials.
Likewise, Allbirds claims, “Our sheep live good lives,” but PETA and its subsidiaries have demonstrated cruelty to sheep around the world, as well as in more than 100 major businesses visited by investigators, even on self-identified “sustainable” and On “responsible” farms, workers beat and trampled the conscious, struggling sheep, and cut their skins and slit their throats. The brand also boasts of its carbon footprint despite the wool industry being a major producer of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.
“Rather than meet the exploding demand for animal-friendly vegan fashion, brands like Everlane and Allbirds are hiding behind empty welfare policies that do little to stop animal suffering,” says PETA’s executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “PETA won’t stand aside and let them pull wool – or alpaca fleece – over the eyes of concerned customers.”
Another winner of the Pants on Fire award is a company from Petaluma. Clover Sonoma, who boasts that they treat cows with kindness and respect, although in the dairy industry these animals are forcibly impregnated, their cubs are taken from them and sent to slaughter as soon as their bodies wear out.
