    – Philadelphia Inquirer Sports (@phillysport) March 25, 2021

In the first three months of 2021, there were already four deaths on Pennsylvania tracks, and last year there was at least 74 deaths on the rails of Pennsylvania. In order to keep injured horses running when they need to rest, drugs are recklessly injected, resulting in bone fractures and death, PETA has reported on numerous occasions.

As one former racing industry insider put it, “This is a pharmaceutical war.”

Despite drugs and death, Pennsylvania’s racing profits from subsidies received from slot machines have totaled more than $ 3 billion since 2004. For all this money, trainers don’t even need to keep horses alive.

PETA saw firsthand the suffering of thoroughbred horses in Pennsylvania. In 2017, we worked to rescue and relocate a horse named Charlie’s Quest, which was forced to race in the state despite suffering from bone chips, arthritis, soreness and severe lameness in all four legs.

To put pressure on the Pennsylvania racing industry, PETA acquired shares in Penn National Gaming, the owner of the Hollywood Casino on Penn National Race Course. Through shareholder activism, we are pushing the operators of this Pennsylvania facility (along with other businesses across the country) to adopt simple rescue changes to protect horses.
