Atlanta – PETA just received a recently published condemning federal inspectorate report on Supplier PetSmart and Petco Sun Pet Ltd. it is documented that partially eaten bodies of dead hamsters have been found in nearly two dozen aviaries – and that hamster eaten alive– along with other violations of six federal regulations. PETA responded by sending letters to PetSmart President and CEO J.K.Simanchik and Petco CEO and Chairman Ron Kaflin urging them to reconsider their companies’ relationship with Sun Pet and stop selling live animals altogether.

The August 4 report details the systemic neglect that plagues hundreds – if not much more – of the nearly 13,000 animals in the Atlanta-based animal dealer’s property. The workers did not notice that “pieces of the deceased hamster” were scattered across the feed and bedding of the animals. Gerbils were denied access to water for so long that they drank “greedily”, when they finally gave some, hamsters were kept in cracked open-air cages, “green fluff” was found on spilled food, and boxes with hamsters were precariously folded, “swaying … Breeze. “Other animals suffered from untreated vision problems, breathing difficulties, hair loss and weight loss.

“Sun Pet deprived animals of water, allowed sick people to suffer and left them to die in dirty cages,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nachminovich. “Neglect and poverty thrive in the pet trade, which is why PETA encourages shoppers to stay away from PetSmart and Petco stores, as well as any other stores that sell live animals.”

Petco and PetSmart have long been criticized for selling animals. PETA’s investigation into PetSmart stores exposed animal neglect and led managers of PetSmart stores in Nashville, Tennessee to plead guilty to animal cruelty. In 2019, the Colorado Department of Agriculture attacked several Petco stores with more than 80 violations of the State Pet Care Act, including neglect, dirt, and poor record keeping. And PETA’s previous investigation into Sun Pet revealed that a worker beat live hamsters on a table and that other acts of abuse were committed.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. Group letters to PetSmart and Petco are available upon request.
