Saline County, Nebraska. – After PETA received USDA documents showing 91 pigs slowly froze to death on trucks over a two-day period, exposed to temperatures as low as minus 27 degrees at Smithfield Foods slaughterhouse in Crete, Animal Rights The group sent a letter to the sheriff today Saline County Alan Moore requesting criminal proceedings and indictments under the Nebraska Livestock Protection Act.

USDA investigated the facility after receiving a letter from PETA, and agency officials found that in each pen in the barn, where animals are left before slaughter, there were pigs that received frostbite up to 30 cm in diameter… The documents obtained by PETA at the request of the Freedom of Information Act also show that Smithfield workers did not unload the pigs for over an hour. one third of trucks arrived in two days of very cold weather

“If someone leaves the dogs to freeze to death, they will face multiple charges of cruelty to animals, and the pigs will suffer the same and they are also protected by the law,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nachminovic. “PETA is calling for a criminal investigation into the gruesome fate of pigs in Smithfield, as pigs have the same capacity for suffering as the animals we live with in our homes.”

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…

This is followed by a letter from PETA Moore.

    Sheriff Alan Moore

    Saline County Sheriff’s Office

    Dear Sheriff Moore:

We respectfully ask your office to investigate and prosecute Smithfield Fresh Meats Corp. and workers responsible for leaving thousands of pigs on trucks as temperatures dropped to -27 ° F, killing at least 91 of them on February 15 and 16 at their slaughterhouse located at 2223 Industrial Rd., near Crete …

On the evening of February 15, PETA received a whistle-blower complaint that the pigs were left in trucks for several hours in the freezing cold, as a result of which some died and others suffered from frostbite. We notified Smithfield management and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on February 16th.

The attached public records, just received from the USDA, confirm that Smithfield workers left pigs on at least 40 trucks more than an hour after they arrived at the slaughterhouse. Federal officials found 91 pigs died on the trucks that arrived on February 15 and 16. A USDA inspector also saw pigs suffering from frostbite – up to 1 foot in length – in each pen in the facility’s barn, and saw other pigs suffering from frostbite in early February.

These findings appear to represent a multitude of criminal offenses under the Nebraska Livestock Protection Act, which prohibits “willfully, knowingly, or inadvertently … ruthless disregard for[ing] livestock “. one Leaving pigs for long periods of time in trucks so that they can suffer large painful frostbite and endure long-term death is not a common commercial animal husbandry practice that would otherwise be exempt from prosecution.

Thank you in advance for your time. Please let us know how we can help you.

    Sincerely,

    Colin Henstock

    Assistant Investigation Manager
