Jones County, miss. – Armed with USDA reports that said workers at the Southern Hens slaughterhouse in the Moselle for nine days threw crates of live chickens, crushed one chicken under a truck, and left the birds scalded and drowned, PETA today sent a letter to Acting Southern Attorney Mississippi County Darren J. Lamarck urged him to consider the matter and, if necessary, file a federal criminal case against the business and workers.
“Chickens feel no less pain and terror than other animals, so this case deserves the same attention as if the dogs were thrown, crushed by a truck and thrown into boiling water,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nachminovic. “PETA encourages everyone who still eats chicken to think about these birds who have experienced a slow, horrific death and have chosen veganism.”

Dear Mr. Lamarck:
We are requesting your office to investigate and bring appropriate criminal charges against Southern Hens, Inc. and employees responsible for at least 13 violations of the Poultry Products Inspection Act between January 4 and April 28, 2020 at her poultry farm. located at 329 Moselle Seminary Rd. in Jones County. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has documented the incidents in the attached reports, which PETA has just received upon request from open sources.
On April 28, a federal agent reportedly saw five fully conscious chicks trying to straighten up while apparently hanging upside down on their shackled legs, submerged in the scalding water in which they apparently drowned, and / or drowned. or were burned alive. On January 4, an FSIS veterinarian saw a truck run over a live chicken, which was crushed to death. Over the nine days from Feb.19 to Apr.30, FSIS staff, including at least two veterinarians, reported seeing Southern chicken workers dumping boxes of live chicks from trailers about six feet long onto a conveyor belt. Some of the caged chicks fell down the aisle below or even 5 feet to the dock below. Although on February 24, if not earlier, the plant manager was notified that this was unacceptable, the toss continued for at least another two months. On another day, a worker was allegedly standing on a box of live chickens, throwing empty boxes into a truck.
21 United States Code § 461 (a) penalizes imprisonment for up to one year and / or a fine of up to $ 1,000 for such behavior. The continued abuse of live chickens in this slaughterhouse shows that FSIS enforcement is not sufficient to prevent future violations and that prosecution is in the best interests of the animals killed there and the public.
