Washington “As part of a progressive move that could save animals from injury and death, the German government agency agreed to question the need for the country’s military to use pigs in medical injury training and evaluate the value of animal-free simulation. models. The decision by the Brandenburg State Office for Occupational Safety, Consumer Protection and Health in Potsdam came after PETA and its subsidiary PETA Germany urged it to reject and ban all current and future permits to conduct military trauma exercises. According to official figures, the ethical validity of exercise on animals will also be questioned.

The German military slaughters and mutilates live pigs, which are used as a backup for soldiers wounded in combat, and then forced medical personnel to practice surgical procedures on them, although the anatomy of animals is very different from that of humans. In their letter to the regulatory body, PETA and PETA Germany pointed to research demonstrating that realistic human simulations and other non-animal techniques which are already used instead of animals in more than 70% of all NATO countriesperform no worse than exercise on animals.

“Maiming sensitive pigs to study human wounds in war is barbaric and unscientific,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA is delighted that German officials are open to using advanced human-related testing methods that protect troops and leave animals alone, not units.”

PETA – whose motto is partly that “animals are not ours to experiment” – opposes specialism, the human superiority belief system that other animals exist so that humans can use them at will.
