Hamster ate alive from suppliers Petco and PetSmart

Partially eaten bodies of dead hamsters were found in nearly two dozen aviaries – and one hamster was eaten alive by other hamsters under severe stress. Invisible “pieces of a dead hamster” were scattered over the food and bedding of the animals. The gerbils couldn’t get to the water. The hamster boxes were not securely folded, “swaying … in the wind.” This is what USDA veterinarians discovered during a routine July inspection by Sun Pet Ltd., a supplier of PetSmart and Petco.

This is the same supplier discussed in the previous PETA Undercover Investigation revealing widespread suffering: the worker even beat live hamsters on the table.

A recent USDA report detailed the systemic neglect affecting hundreds – if not much more – of the nearly 13,000 animals at the animal supplier’s Atlanta site. The spilled food had “green fluff”. The gerbils who were denied access to water were drinking “voraciously” when they were finally given. The hamsters were kept in cracked open-air cages. Other animals suffered from untreated eye problems, difficulty breathing, hair loss and weight loss.

    dead guinea pig named Waylon

A PETA witness found this underweight guinea pig, Waylon, dead five days after it arrived at Sun Pet’s PetSmart store.

In response to a recent report, we wrote to PetSmart President and CEO J.K.Simanchik and Petco CEO and Chairman Ron Kaflin urging them to reconsider their companies’ relationship with Sun Pet and stop selling live animals altogether.

“[W]We urge you to reconsider your opinion about whether you wish to remain involved in such miserable misfortune and neglect, ”PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nakhminovic wrote in a letter to Simanczyk. “Anyway, what do you need to do to stop selling live animals altogether and instead promote the adoption of all animals and sell only products for them?”

Now – with a recent report detailing the extreme suffering and neglect of animals that can violate state law – we also call on Fulton County Solicitor General Keith E. Gummage to investigate Sun Pet and bring appropriate criminal charges against those responsible.

PETA urges PetSmart and Petco to reconsider their relationship with Sun Pet and completely stop selling animals for the years…

PetSmart and Petco’s lack of awareness has repeatedly shown that we cannot rely on these chains to do the right thing with animals, but we can take one simple step to help stop animal suffering in the pet trade: never buy or buy anyone. something– not even a bag of treats – from shops selling sentient beings. There are many pet supply stores and online stores such as PetFlow.com, Target and Wag.com that do not condemn animals to miserable lives and painful deaths. Click below to take additional steps:
