We’ve all heard that smoking a cigarette takes 11 minutes of your life, but did you know that drinking a hot dog shortens your healthy life by 36 minutes?

A new study focused on quantifying the health effects of food choices based on healthy life minutes gained or lost, found that meat from most animals shortens your healthy life every time you eat it. Research has shown that replacing just 10% of the animal foods you eat per day with some other foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and legumes, can help you experience 48 minutes of healthy life every day – talk about food for thought!

The Healthy Eating Index (HENI), which was developed by researchers at the University of Michigan, assesses the health risks and benefits of various foods and calculates how eating them affects a person’s overall health. The researchers also grouped foods into red, amber, and green zones for environmental impact. This traffic light system offers an easy way to understand which products are “full stop”, “tread light” or “green light” in terms of sustainability.

The study suggests everyone will gradually move away from those in the red zone, which includes foods like beef, pork and cheese. Eating corned beef with tomato sauce and onions will cost you 71 minutes of healthy life, according to a HENI report, as lean veggies aren’t enough to compensate for the health damage of cow meat. Researchers urge people to eat more green zone foods, which are mostly fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts.

This is what PETA has been saying for decades! Vegan foods can increase your lifespan, and many of the healthy foods you may already be eating, such as peanut butter and fruits, can increase your lifespan.

The World Health Organization also found that eating red meat and meat products, including hot dogs, bacon, and deli meats, can cause cancer, heart disease, obesity, and other life-threatening diseases. Avoiding animal meat and other animal products is not only a healthy choice, but also out of compassion.

Pigs, cows, chickens and other food animals spend their entire lives in dirty, heavily overcrowded enclosures where they cannot express their natural behavior. Pigs, for example, use at least 20 distinct grunts and grunts to communicate with each other, and mothers even “sing” to their cubs while breastfeeding. More than 6 million pigs are housed in brooding and farrowing boxes throughout the United States, where piglets are taken from them at 10 days of age, fed until they reach 280 pounds, and slaughtered just to fill American plates.

Other animals should not suffer because of our food. There are hundreds of delicious and nutritious vegan foods that can help stop animal suffering, protect the environment, and improve human health. Every vegan saves about 200 animals every year! Take part in PETA’s 3-week vegan trial to start making healthy changes in your life, and be proactive to encourage others to do the same.
