Ames, Iowa – Young scientists from Iowa State University once received a PETA grant to develop a placenta-on-a-chip to replace the use of animals in poisoning tests – and now that the school year begins, PETA offers a big new incentive for this year’s class to put them on mental literacy. The group is seeking student applications for the Future Without Speciesism Cash Award, which is accompanied by prize up to $ 10,000 for interesting innovations that can help end animal suffering, protect the planet for future generations, and improve human health.

To win, candidates must identify how animals are still subject to specisism – the archaic notion that all other species are inferior to humans and that they can be exploited – and develop an action plan or design for a market-free substitute without animals. Other examples of the golden star include a patented process by researchers at the University of Missouri that is now being used to create in vitro (test tube) chicken and their participation in development abovethe popular Beyond Meat program; and the ongoing work of UC Berkeley students to develop robots that will replace the dogs that spend their days leading blind people.

“Fantastic inventions for animals have already been invented at Iowa State University before, and PETA hopes to give impetus to the next students who have the moment to modernize the animal use practice or industry,” says Martha, PETA Senior Director of Youth Programs. Holmberg. “There is no limit to the ideas that young innovative minds can come up with to help animals not become tacos, trinkets, test tubes or anything else that deprives them of the right to be themselves.”

The award is open to all students from all over the world. It does not transfer ownership of PETA, nor does it prevent applicants from patenting their inventions. Students can work as a team or individually. Prize amounts vary between 1000 USD and USD 10,000 and will be determined by PETA based on the performance, usability and viability of the submissions. PETA’s motto, in particular, is that “animals are not in our hands to abuse them.” For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
