Norfolk, Virginia. – Every Halloween, PETA hears about families who had to make midnight trips to the ambulance veterinary clinic to keep the holiday from turning into a real horror movie. PETA shares tips for a safe Halloween.
- Candy is not a dandy. Chocolate and many other types of candy are toxic to pets, so keep these items (and their indigestible wrappers, which can cause intestinal blockages) out of their reach. This means there are no decorative candy bowls on the coffee table!
- Animal costumes are fashion not… Restraining Halloween costumes can confuse animals, confuse them, restrict their movement and vision, and even strangle them. A party bandana is a safer option, but no clothes at all are the best option.
- Keep dogs at home. Crowded sidewalks, people in suits, and squealing children can overwhelm and scare even the friendliest dog, leading to unpredictable behavior that endangers them – and strangers who may run up and try to pet them. The safest place for dogs is at home, but keep the following tip in mind.
- Cheaters can be scary! Animals can get nervous all night ringing the doorbell, and even run out the front door while their guardians hand out candy. So keep them safe and secure in a private room with a TV or soothing music – and just in case, make sure they are microchipped and have current ID tags.
- Keep cats at home especially on Halloween. Homes with families are the safest place for cats year-round, as free-roaming cats are vulnerable to the dangers of cars, other animals, disease and violent people, but keeping them indoors is critical in late October when attackers target them. especially on black cats.
“The candy and costumes that make October 31st fun for humans can be deadly for dogs and cats,” says Stephanie Bell, PETA’s senior director of cruelty. “Our animals count on us to keep them safe, and PETA’s advice can help families prevent heartbreak on Halloween.”
