On Thursday, September 23, 111 dogs were rescued from one home by Mesquite Animal Services employees. The rescue came in response to reports from local residents that a large number of dogs on the property need help.
Maria Martinez, director of Mesquite’s Neighborhood Services, spoke to the city’s press about the rescue process. According to Martinez, the homeowner handed over the dogs to the city when rescuers arrived at the property. The rescued dogs were then transported to the Buurtdiensten shelter. Once there, they were vaccinated and confiscated while officials worked out how to proceed.
“We worked with our rescue partners and at the end of the day, all dogs left the shelter to begin their new journey,” Martinez told the city press, adding that the city code allows a maximum of three dogs per household.
Mesquite Animals Pawtners posted on their Facebook page about the impressive rescue. Kudos to Mesquite Shelter for their efforts in rescuing a much larger number of dogs than expected. According to the post, the rescue team initially expected to rescue about 20 dogs, but left with more than five times that number.
The Facebook post also explains that the unprecedented nature of this rescue has led to the shelter’s closure due to the unexpected turn of events. In addition, the dogs are temporarily unavailable for adoption because every dog that was rescued required some form of medical care.
Fortunately, Mesquite Animal Services was able to work with fellow rescuers to place all dogs with different rescue partners until they recover and find their forever homes.
“This was a successful rescue event,” Martinez explained in a press release. “We couldn’t have done it without our hard-working city workers who acted quickly and with compassion, and our rescue partners.”
