Laredo, TX – Since a recent poll ranked Laredo as one of the least vegan-friendly cities in the country, PETA placed ads on local buses delivers to people food for thought the cruelty of eating animals and encouraging them to try veganism.

“PETA bus ads will have some people hit the brakes when it comes to eating animals and remember that the real person dies when people don’t choose vegan food,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “When it comes to feelings of pain and fear, and how to value your life, a pig is no different from a human – and just as much deserves compassion.”

In the modern meat industry, mothers’ pigs are placed in narrow metal stalls, slightly larger than their bodies, and are kept almost constantly pregnant or breastfeeding. Pigs have their tails chopped off, their teeth cut off with pliers, and males are castrated – all without any pain relief. In the slaughterhouse, they are hung upside down – sometimes still conscious – and bleed to death.

Anyone who goes vegan saves about 200 animals each year; dramatically reduces the carbon footprint; reduces their risk of developing cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes and obesity; and helps prevent future pandemics. SARS, swine flu, avian flu and COVID-19, which hit Laredo particularly hard, all stemmed from keeping and killing animals for food.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat,” opposes specisism, which is a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
