Miami – PETA just discovered a new 17-page federal inspectorate report that highlighted a variety of animal welfare violations at the Miami Marine Aquarium, including that it repeatedly acted contrary to veterinarian instructions; kept incompatible animals together, which led to injuries and death of two bottlenose dolphins; and were unable to provide the killer whale Lolita and several other animals with sufficient shade, leaving them in direct sunlight, which can cause painful damage to their eyes. This is the first time that the USDA has referenced an object due to insufficient shade, although PETA has been raising this issue for years.

When: Friday, October 1, 12:00 pm

Where: Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, 1350 NW 12th Ave., Miami

In response, PETA supporters will go to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office tomorrow and demand that Miami-Dade County Attorney Catherine Fernandez Rundle investigate and charge the Marine Aquarium with atrocities. 2020 about the brutal conditions in which Lolita is kept.

According to a recently released June 8 report, the Oceanarium went against veterinarian instructions when it repeatedly fed marine mammals with substandard, foul-smelling fish; reducing Lolita’s food intake; continued to force her to perform tricks that probably injured her jaw; and despite the documented aggression of Lolita and the two Pacific white-sided dolphins that were already kept with her, he planned to move two more Pacific white-sided dolphins into the same aquarium. The aquarium also admitted that it had no way of keeping track of which dolphins were housed together on any particular day, so it had no way of predicting dolphin compatibility or aggression.

“The Miami Aquarium ignored the instructions of its veterinarians to feed Lolita bad fish and force her to perform tricks that, among other things, caused her injury,” says PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on the state to act now to protect Lolita and other animals, and finally hold the aquarium accountable for its culture of cruelty.”

The report also notes that visitors had cell phones, cameras and even small children through the metal barrier surrounding Lolita’s tank, endangering both her and the visitors. Dangerously high levels of chlorine and parasites were measured in the pools, and many of the tanks were in various malfunctioning conditions. One underwater fence was simply fastened together and two dolphins burst into a nearby tank and apparently attacked another dolphin, injuring at least four broken ribs.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to be used for entertainment” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
