San Diego – After hearing from PETA and over 80,000 group members and supporters, Zhemchuzhina Hotel stopped putting betta fish in cramped bowls in their rooms. PETA sends a box of delicious fish-shaped vegan chocolates to the hotel as a token of gratitude.

“The Pearl Hotel did the right thing by realizing that even tiny fish have a vested interest in enjoying their lives,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA thanks the hotel for its kindness. each and encourages people not to buy fish as ‘pets’. “

Prior to its compassionate decision, the Pearl was the last stop for fighting fish, which, as it was well-documented, survived the grueling and often fatal journey to the United States from Thailand. PETA Asia’s investigation into the betta fishing industry found fish gasping for air on waterless trays when workers roughly graded them for shipment. Some of them suffocated and were left to rot on the floor, while others were found floating motionless in tanks of dirty water. Betta is usually packed without food and left to starve for several days during international transport.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not in our hands to be abused in any way,” opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
