Green Bay, Wisconsin. – In honor of the 12 cows that were killed when a truck that reportedly was taking them to the JBS slaughterhouse capsized at the N. Packerland Drive and Highway 29 roundabout on Monday, PETA plans to place a billboard near the crash site that reads: “See Human. Become a vegan.“Some of the 12 died instantly, while others had to be shot on the spot after being severely injured.

“Twelve tender cows died in horror and agony in the crash, and the injured survivors were likely dragged out to have their throats slit and their bodies slashed for food,” says PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s ad encourages anyone concerned about animals suffering on the side of the road or under the knife of a slaughterhouse to become vegan.”

Cows in the meat industry are often kept in cramped and muddy feedlots with no weather protection. In the slaughterhouse, workers shoot them in the head with a pistol with captive bolts, hang them by one leg, and slit their throats – often while they are still conscious.

PETA notes that there have been at least 22 accidents this year involving trucks transporting animals for food, including one earlier that day in Green Bay, and there were at least 89 last year. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 cows, pigs, chickens and other animals each year and helps prevent future epidemics and pandemics. Keeping and killing animals for food has been linked to SARS, swine flu, avian influenza and COVID-19, and the meat industry has allowed slaughterhouse workers to face an almost uncontrolled spread of the novel coronavirus.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
