Washington – See PETA Vice President Dr Alka Chandna’s statement regarding the 2019 USDA number of animals housed and used in US laboratories, just released by the USDA, including 49,422 animals used in experiments in which they suffered incurable pain ( column E).
New numbers have been released, and in 2019, US laboratories tested about 50,000 animals. it caused great pain–no anesthesia– a shameful admission that the United States was unable to keep up with the times and use modern research methods. It is an indisputable fact that animal experiments do not lead to the treatment of humans, and because of this heartless disregard for the suffering of living beings, we lag behind other countries both scientifically and ethically. Modern research methods – from organs on a chip to supercomputers – produce much more sophisticated and effective results than electroshocking a monkey or an owl in head restraints. It’s time to remove the animal experimenters from the driver’s seat and instruct modern scientists.
USDA figures do not include mice, rats, reptiles, amphibians, fish, or other species that feel pain and fear and make up more than 95% of animals in laboratories but are not substantially protected by any federal law.
