Washington – Waving giant photographs of Marines drinking the blood of snakes, PETA protesters will pounce on the Pentagon on Thursday to demand that Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III stop using live animals during the annual Cobra Gold military exercise, in which Marines skin and eat live geckos, eat live scorpions and tarantulas, decapitate cobras and drink their blood.

When: Thursday, 8 April, 12 noon

Where: Pentagon (To enter the protest area from the Fashion Center garage, walk under the tunnel and cross the South Parking lot. From the subway, take the escalator and head towards Pentagon City. The protest area is on the left in front of the N. Rotary Road checkpoint.)

“Drinking snake blood and eating live animals during Cobra Gold is cruel and poses the risk of transmitting a dangerous zoonotic disease, potentially similar to COVID-19,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA is pushing Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III to stop insulting the honor of the Marines and risking public health with these horrific bloodthirsty parties disguised as training exercises.”

Cobra Gold is ostensibly dedicated to survival training, but officials have admitted that the actual intent is to create camaraderie between the troops, which can be done in other ways. Department of Defense policy requires that non-animal training methods be used whenever possible, and there are many options for teaching food procurement – from books and videos to virtual reality and computer simulations – that do not harm animals and that have been adopted by various Military facilities. USA after they heard from PETA.

PETA – whose motto is, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment” – opposes specisism, which is the worldview of human supremacists. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
