Washington – Below is a statement by PETA President Ingrid Newkirk in response to a new statement by the World Health Organization that, due to the threat of zoonoses from live animal markets, it is urging governments to suspend trade in live mammals:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has now taken one of two steps that PETA has required of it over a year of appeals, clandestine videotapes of live animal markets, blood-soaked protests, and collecting signatures from over 200,000 people. supporters. WHO recommends suspending the trade in live wild mammals, but ignores the plight of chickens, ducks, fish and frogs, which are caged and clogged in mud, and leaves the door open for the next pandemic to emerge. All live animal markets should be closed, whether they sell bats in Indonesia or birds in Brooklyn.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
