Shasta County, California. – PETA sent a letter to Shasta County District Attorney Stephanie A. Bridgett this morning asking him to add animal cruelty charges, if appropriate, to those currently facing Alexandra Suverneva for the Deer alleged arson, which destroyed more than 8,500 acres, animal habitats destroyed, and undoubtedly countless animals burned to death.
PETA notes that causing suffering and painful death to animals, which likely occurred during this fire, should be considered a violation of California’s animal welfare laws.
“Countless scared animals saw their world disappear, and many must have been burned to death in this devastating fire,” says PETA vice president Daniel Paden. “PETA hopes that once these victims are identified, the person in charge will also be accused of causing them so much suffering.”
Bridgette’s office expanded its criminal investigation into PG&E’s role in the Zogg fire to include animal deaths following an earlier report from PETA, while an Oregon attorney who heard from PETA charged the accused arsonist with eight counts of first-degree animal cruelty for allegedly as a result, a sheep, a canary, a lamb, a goldfish, chickens and a raccoon were killed.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
