Birmingham, Alabama. – In honor of Women’s History Month (March), PETA (an organization founded by a woman and led by women) has chosen its own Birmingham foundation. Angela Davis as one of five female pioneers to be celebrated, and the millions who look to them as role models, may be surprised to learn that their social justice work includes protecting animals.

An educator, activist and advocate of prison reform, Davis quickly realized the connection between oppression of humans and other animals. As she said, “I think there is a connection between … how we treat animals and how we treat people at the bottom of the hierarchy,” and she decided to challenge the terrible treatment of animals. who are raised and killed for their flesh by becoming a vegan.

“Avoiding meat and dairy products is the right step for anyone who cares about equality, non-violence or the plight of others – no matter what skin they are in, whether they have fur, fins or feathers,” says the president of PETA Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA encourages everyone to join Angela Davis to demonstrate solidarity between species and to condemn the oppression of any living being.”

PETA notes that sexual exploitation is widespread in the meat, egg and dairy industries, where female cows are artificially inseminated (that is, raped by inserting a hand into the rectum and a metal rod into the vagina), chickens are sent to slaughter. once their bodies wear out, mother pigs spend their entire adult lives in cramped metal boxes. Slaughterhouses are also a nightmare for workers, many of whom are of color, who face some of the most dangerous working conditions in America, including the almost uncontrolled spread of COVID-19.

Other PETA Award winners – Hollywood pioneer Cecily Tyson, trade union activist Dolores Huerta, feminist icon Gloria Steinem and racial justice leader Coretta Scott King – are all vegetarian or vegan.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to eat,” is opposed to specisism, a human supremacist worldview that justifies violence against other animals. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
