Toledo, Ohio – In honor of Women’s History Month (March), PETA (an organization founded by a woman and led by women) chose Gloria Steinem as one of five female pioneers to celebrate, and the millions who look to these women as role models may be surprised to learn that their social justice work includes protecting animals.

Named “The Most Famous Feminist in the World” National GeographySteinem has used its platform to advocate for animals in a variety of ways, including joining PETA to oppose the National Institutes of Health’s cruel and wasteful animal experiments. feeding two birds with one cake helping create a ruthless lip balm for female prisoners. As she said: “The future depends entirely on what each of us does every day; movement is only people, ”and she brought these words to life by removing the animals from the table.

“Gloria Steinem understands that everyone – no matter what skin, fur, fins or feathers they are wearing – has the right to live without exploitation, suffering or discrimination,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA encourages everyone to respect its heritage by demonstrating solidarity between different species and condemning the subordination of any living being.”

PETA – whose motto, in particular, is that “animals are not ours to eat” – notes that sexual exploitation is widespread in the meat, egg and dairy industries due to arrogance, a human superiority mentality that all other species of animals are secondary. to our own. Female cows undergo artificial insemination (raped by inserting a hand into the rectum and a metal rod into the vagina), chickens are sent to slaughter as soon as their bodies wear out, and mother pigs spend their entire adult life in cramped metal boxes.

Steinem was named one of America’s 25 Most Powerful Women, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Other PETA Winners – Hollywood Pioneers Cecely Tyson, trade union activist Dolores Huerta, educator and advocate of prison reform Angela Davisand the leader of racial justice Coretta Scott King—All vegetarians or vegans.
